The remarkable planet that inspired the Diatom Terra Collection

The introduction of the Terra Collection marked the beginning of a bold new chapter in the Diatom story, one powered exclusively by the precision engineering of Swiss automatic movements. However, this watershed range of limited-edition timepieces is defined by much more than just its technical specifications, with the bold yet refined design language of each model based around specific terrestrial features. This article takes a look at the ethos behind the collection as a whole, as well as taking a deep dive into the planetary traits that inspired all five Terra variants.

An ode to planet Earth

From the Roman Terra to the Greek Gaia, Earth has been called many things since the dawn of civilisation. No matter what you call it, our very own Blue Marble is the cradle of life as we know it and the origin of mankind’s every journey outwards. Despite Earth’s unique status, its familiarity often leaves it overlooked, with public wonder reserved almost exclusively for the Solar System’s more ‘alien’ worlds. The Terra Collection was conceived to rectify this and put Earth back on the pedestal it deserves. Each model in the range was inspired by a particular terrestrial feature and pays tribute to the special little planet we call home.

Lagoon

First up is Terra Lagoon, taking its inspiration from primordial Earth’s tropical shallows. These fertile waters played host to the earliest forms of photosynthesising organisms called cyanobacteria, which singlehandedly kickstarted the oxygenation of our infant planet’s atmosphere. Terra Lagoon’s meteorite dial emulates cyanobacteria’s unique blue-green colouring, celebrating the ancient lifeforms that paved the way for humanity’s first breath.

Verdant

Soon after cyanobacteria conquered the oceans, photosynthesising organisms evolved to live on land and eventually spread out across the entire globe. Our planet’s abundant plant life is exactly what inspired Terra Verdant’s vibrant green meteorite dial, echoing the colour of the lush vegetation that allowed Earth to become a diverse oasis of life in a vast empty cosmos.

Arctic

Life is a remarkably fragile concept and relies on the presence of a temperate climate to survive. Earth’s ice caps play a crucial role in maintaining this, regulating global weather patterns, stimulating ocean currents and reflecting a portion of the Sun’s heat back into space. Terra Arctic is a tribute to Earth’s crowning jewels and features a striking white meteorite dial that’s inspired by the extraordinary beauty of these glacial wonders.

Azure

It’s not only the polar ice caps that defend life from uninhabitable extremes, with Earth’s humble atmosphere shielding the planet from solar radiation and freezing temperatures. When viewed from outer space, this protective bubble becomes a luminous ribbon that envelops the entire planet, and Terra Azure’s blue meteorite dial is inspired by the uniquely captivating shade of this glowing horizon.

Graphite

Our planet’s atmosphere also protects us from meteoroids. However, every now and then one makes it through without fully burning up, which was exactly the fate of the Gibeon meteorite. This 4.5 billion year-old celestial wanderer was the inspiration for Terra Graphite’s meteorite dial, presented in its raw form to showcase the crystalline Widmanstätten patterns that adorn its surface.

Dune

The Gibeon meteorite landed in the Kalahari Desert long before the dawn of civilisation. This ancient impact site is what inspired Terra Dune, with its meteorite dial echoing the ochre hues of the Namibian landscape it made landfall in. Thousands of years after the Gibeon meteorite arrived on our planet, this remarkable timepiece pays tribute to the desert that caught it.

The whole package

The Terra Collection is Diatom’s ode to our home planet, celebrating the wonders of the only world known to harbour life. In addition to the Earth-inspired meteorite dials, every one of these space-flown watches also incorporates a space-tested Swiss Sellita SW200 movement and a bespoke chapter ring containing material reclaimed from the Apollo 11 Command Module. Numbers are extremely limited, so be sure to secure your own tribute to planet Earth while there’s still time.
